It really depends on the piece. There’s some abstract stuff that I feel is derivative or lazy but a lot of it has some sort of meaning or you can tell the artist has aesthetic sense. Personally I really enjoy abstract art that combines realism with abstraction

I’m with you on that. As an added point, it depends on how it was created. Like there’s an artist I see on TikTok a lot who has a huge setup to make massive paintings out of paint splatter from hanging paint cans, while he spins the cans and canvas very intentionally. Always turns out amazing and I can appreciate his dedication

There’s also that massive canvas painting that’s just plain blue, and I hated it for a long time until I found out it’s so special because the artist made it with paint brushes but you can’t see a single brush stroke on the entire canvas. It’s not visually appealing to me still, but at least there’s real effort and talent behind that

Exactly, like it really depends on the technique and effort put into it as well as the aesthetic quality

You know what’s funny is I kinda personally feel the paint can art stuff is an example of BAD abstract art lol. It’s just kind of pointless paint splatters while He spins around. There’s no technique involved, it’s just throwing random stuff at the canvas and seeing how it comes out. Great abstract art I feel has more intention, though it may not always seem that way. Rothko is a great example.

I agree — not a big fan of art where the artist is not creating it deliberately. It feels very gimmicky. I think the most important parts of art is the meaning and the effort put into it by the artist

Another I think fits this is Jackson Pollock. It’s drip art, like the other guys, but is done in a way that is very intentional and creates really interesting atmosphere and tones. It’s like impressionist scenes done in the most chaotic way possible and it works
