They kinda did. Look up bill C-3. If you have any ancestors who were Canadian citizens you can now claim Canadian citizenship now. I have Acadian ancestors and plan to apply when I can get the proper documentation.

I’ve looked at it before but thought it only went back to post-confederation. I know I have a Canadian ancestor, but idk if the law applies because he left in the late 1700s

People have been approved with having their last Canadian ancestors pre-confederation. As long as you can prove that you are a direct descendant of a Canadian then you should be good.

Good to know! I’ve considered applying to Canadian schools for my doctorate and I’ll definitely keep that in mind
