i know a trump supporter who told me that raising the minimum wage would make small businesses go bankrupt because they can't afford to pay their workers

this is gonna piss some people off, but depending on the business and their margins, the business might have to slightly increase prices to compensate for the higher wages 😬 probably wouldn’t go bankrupt, but it wouldn’t be business as usual for ALL small businesses like restaurants have tiny margins and high turnover but that’s a whole different wage convo too

I heard this as well and I think some proposals literally made small businesses exempt for this reason

True, and they may have to lay some people off. Idk why people say tariffs are passed on to the consumer but don’t see that higher wages could be as well

exactly! like it’s all complicated! in theory, if people made more money and the prices didn’t increase significantly then it would have a general overall positive impact because people could spend more money

people should be able to afford to live and small businesses should have wages subsidized

Subsidized by the government? If that’s the case I feel like it’s fair for the government to have a say in how the business is run and ensure that people are actually working

that's neither here nor there, people should be able to afford to live

Absolutely, but why not just give free healthcare and ensure people are fed properly directly? Routing it through the subsidization of wages for small business employees seems ripe for corruption and abuse. No way to monitor whether the employees are fake or whether the boss is taking some of the money. It’s not coming from the boss’ pocket so why would they play by the rules?

ehhh increase minimum wage definitely, but maybe just give small businesses a heads up and the opportunity to apply for some grants. if they’re notified ahead of time, they can adjust their budget and see what they need to do. unfortunately it just comes with the possibility of negative side effects like everything else. can’t really avoid that or try to make it not happen. you can prepare!! and that’s why a heads up would be good
