Generative AI should be outlawed. Certain AI tools have industry and academic applications, but there’s no positive use image or text generation.

Because we often don’t know the innovations that are important until after. It’s new, we aren’t fully sure of its potential impact, or what else it could lead to.

we know it’s current impacts are disastrous

Define disastrous, a professional bookkeeper would have called excel disastrous, auto workers called robotic innovation disastrous, the newspapers called online news disastrous. That’s what people say to every new idea and innovation.

bookkeeping, excel, (you could argue individual car usage is disastrous still), robots, online news, etc. have not contributed this much of a toll on the only planet we have.

you are contributing to an UNSUSTAINABLE system which must come to an end sooner than later because the earth has nothing left to give

But the issue isn’t the generation it’s the power. Because we still refuse to switch to nuclear energy because of fear mongering. That’s not really a valid concern to stop something, by that logic you should power down your phone right now because it requires fossil fuels to charge.

That we have a literal answer to cheap and clean power generation that we refuse to use?

and it’s the extent to which these machines use electricity & water vs. other machines to an extent that is unprecedented

what is the benefit of generative AI usage by you & me that outweighs the water supply in municipalities being drained?

it’s not about the power they could use it’s about the power they currently already use & the rate at which they use it. how long before they switch to nuclear? how much harm?

That it’s next, it followed the internet which followed computers which followed centuries of human innovation. We shouldn’t stop the train now, we have the ability to solve problems that’s what we do.

Disastrous in a legal way. Image generation is commonly used to generate illegal pornography of children and adults without their consent. It makes revenge porn not just easy, but accessible. Image generation is also serving to further make art-related jobs difficult to find, outsourcing creativity, the very thing that makes us human, to machines. Scientifically, generative AI has no use due to the potential for artifacts to be generated. Conventional data-based modeling will always be superior.

You say that we have the ability to solve problems, but generative AIs like ChatGPT are already serving to allow people to outsource their problem-solving skills to machines as well. Soon, the public will lose that ability.

until ai is more environmentally sustainable, and quite frankly, smarter & better than it is now, calling for widespread proliferation is ridiculous.
