Gun crime is a publicly available statistic from the government and while defensive gun uses (DGUs) have been tracked by a number of metrics that are not backed by the government, all of them show either roughly equivalent numbers for DGUs and total gun deaths (suicide, police shootings, homicide, and accidental deaths) or more DGUs than total deaths. Most of these reports also find that the number of DGUs is likely higher than estimated because of the unwillingness for the person defending 1/2
