Zohran Mamdani, as it turns out, is another case of “the system will never allow for radical change from within” and I didn’t wanna be all left-pessimistic when we were having fun with it and scaring the conservatives, but man he really is a liberal.

I’ve stopped getting my hopes up for anything within the democratic party at this point

“Radical socialist” to standard corporate democrat pipeline is real and it’s where everyone cool goes to die

Is he the best liberal in really any form of American gov rn? Yeah, I think that’s pretty indisputable. But I think what Mamdani has done tbh is show just how low the floor is for dems. He’s doing what should be the default for the party, but liberals have gotten so used to disappointment that he seems like someone exceptional. Really he’s just picking up where FDR left off

I was definitely suspicious during his campaign because I believed there was no way an outsider would even be allowed to run for mayor of the largest city in the US. Turns out I should’ve listened to that gut feeling, the SRG is still standing and Tisch is still NYPD commissioner.

i mean, i kind of get it? i really don’t think the american people are quite ready for socialism yet. there’s still a big boogeyman surrounding the word socialist. a lot of people still think “socialism bad”. is he WAY more progressive than liberal and liberal-adjacent politicians of the past? oh yeah. definitely. but still kind of more moderate that he could be, though i think that’s intentional to a certain degree.

He is great for public relations purposes, for pointing out the inherent flaws of electoralism, and for providing momentary relief to some new yorkers. The usefulness of Zohran Mamdani in making change in this country begins and ends there

I also think DSA, as an internal critique, has always been a little shy to un-endorse. Like once someone is DSA-endorsed, I don’t know what it would take to actually lose that. Like how many strikes do you get before you’re cut off? Because it’s one thing to be fighting and losing, I don’t expect change to be easy, but you at least gotta be doing what is well within the scope of your power. You gotta be putting in an effort.

Basically tldr is Mamdani is what the default for the party should be, and because he’s actually at the level of not being totally useless, he shines in comparison to other dems. but he isn’t doing anything radical

Ok tbf to Mamdani, the NYPD are a bunch of whiny bitches, so even touching them would prob lead to half of them going on strike and screaming abt how they can’t kill or harass minorities anymore. I can understand wanting to not have your first year or so not have a massive PR nightmare

At some point the NYPD Band-Aid’s gotta get ripped off, if they go on soft-strike over the Mayor exercising the authority he was given by the people of the city to choose the commissioner, then they’re breaking their oath to the public, and you can just hammer that. I was hoping Zohran would be the first Democrat not to cower in the face of the one city department where 80% of the staff live in the damn suburbs.

It’s like trying to reason with a squad of preschoolers, cops are actually mentally cooked half the time. Now if Mamdani doesn’t slowly ramp up pressure on them I’ll be more disappointed in him

Tbh if he was serious he would let them. They live in NY too, they would still see the consequences of their strike just to preserve a city-sanctioned hit squad and a commissioner who cares more about arrest numbers than actually addressing crime.

Oh I totally agree it does need to eventually be ripped off and dealt with, but I do understand in the first year wanting to avoid a nationwide PR disaster. Ik there’s some socialists who would disagree with me, but to a degree public image does matter bc the median voter is actually a mouth breathing idiot. You have to be able to sell your positions

Already addressed it in another comment but I don’t disagree, I just also think that to a degree optics does matter. And I can understand wanting to have some big successes under Mamdani’s belt before him going for the NYPD

“This is not a labor issue, we didn’t change their working conditions, we didn’t lower their salaries, we made no direct changes to police policy. We simply installed a new commissioner, as is standard practice for an incoming mayoral administration. The NYPD’s response is simply a dereliction of duty for political reasons.” It’s that simple. Democrats as a rule are just kinda cowardly about any and all negotiations. They NEVER play hard ball even when they run as “not like the other democrats”

Again, I don’t disagree. It’s just that I think Mamdani needs some successes under his belt before doing that. Having some good will in your direction from the general public makes them less likely to take what would be an inevitable police strike as seriously

He’s one of the most popular politicians in the country rn, he’s got all the good will anyone could ever hope for. I don’t think he needs to be pulling Assad numbers in the polls to be able to win that battle in the public eye, especially among the people who it matters for him to do so with, his own constituents. Because frankly I don’t care if people outside New York clutch their pearls about reining in the NYPD.

Idk I hope what I’m saying makes sense, ik I’ve sorta waffled a bit here. I’m just trying to say that to a degree I can understand not having that be something you do out the gate. Strategy is important

i will say, however, it’s refreshing seeing a politician give a shit and actively try and help people. liberal, socialist, or whatever you wanna call him, it’s clear he at least is TRYING to help the people of new york.

I’m not asking him to seize the means of production, I just think he should at least appoint a new NYPD commissioner. That’s part of his job description, he gets to do that. Don’t run as a radical and then govern in a cowardly way. “Oh the NYPD will be mad tho” Good. The NYPD’s been dirty for a century, you’re gonna have to piss them off in their current state if you ever wanna fix anything. Fixing that organization is gonna piss off the people benefitting from it being broken.

If he kowtows here, he’s basically showing his belly to every other force that would stand in the way of progress. Refusing to exercise his written and precedented right to appoint a police commissioner because the NYPD might get mad is a crazy display of weakness. Every other right wing interest group will see that, and know how easy it is to make him back down off the things the people of the city voted for.
