 Leftists are doing public defender discourse over on twitter and it’s very funny to me to see how many are showing their entire ass about how reactionary they are on issues of criminal justice by being like “I hate PDs, they get assigned the Bad Guys!”

it’s crazy bc like, what even is the alternative they would want no defenders for the poor? forced pro bono private lawyers? yeah THAT won’t be a cesspool of corruption at all. “no the govt could compensate them” Well I Have Great News For You About Something That Exists Already

and then most of them go “well what I actually want is to eliminate the carceral state and pursue restorative justice” and like that’s great and I agree but you still need a mechanism of determining whether someone actually did something wrong

Like when people ask me how I feel about the death penalty as a guy who’s studying to be a criminal defense attorney, my answer is actually the opposite of what they expect, which is “I’m against it in practice because 4% of people executed are innocent, and any number of innocents killed by the state is too high, but I get it in *principle* for super heinous people like serial killers” and that manages to piss off both sides of the argument
