“Oh you’re SUCH a good person for caring about snap benefits 🙄” isn’t the dig you think it is lmao bc like, at a certain point when does it stop being virtue signaling and start being baseline care for other people

It is baseline care. People using that term “virtue signaling” in a conversation like that, are just attempting to weaponize your empathy against you. They lack the empathy, or were never taught how to recognize or develop empathy; so they view it as a weakness rather than a necessity and strength.

It’s reminiscent of that quote from Captain Gustave Gilbert during the Nuremberg trials: “I’ve been searching for the nature of evil. I think I’ve come close to defining it: a lack of empathy. It’s the one characteristic that connects all the defendants. A genuine incapacity to feel with their fellow man. Evil, I think, is the absence of empathy”

I think they feel icky about being called a bad person and need to turn it around like “no YOURE the bad person actually I just am being realistic” or smth

Honestly though. That’s probably why they call it virtue signaling, even if people are just being empathetic towards others. People would rather turn around and attempt to flip blame, instead of reflecting on why they’re being called out for their actions; but then again I guess this ain’t anything new sadly :(
