If tariffs are supposed to protect the US economy, why has the number of factory jobs decreased by 28000 since trump took office?

Because people forget that when you put tariffs on other countries they usually reply with their own tariffs. The Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act went down a similar way 90 years ago.

I didn’t even know that but I got so desperate trying to find a job that I went to go look at the Amazon warehouse (i hate Amazon but I’m desperate) bc I worked there 2 summers after not being able to land anything else and know they were always hiring for like every single shift and hire anyone. They are not hiring. For any shift.

Yeah it’s also a very uncertain landscape for corporations. Who would want to build a factory in the US now? Tariffs come and go, allies cutting ties with us, wouldn’t surprise me if countries don’t allow imports from the US soon
