There’s actually a huge cultural difference in Japan. Kind of simialr to the US idea of promotions it functions on a ladder system. But in this case people at the top (usually older) are expected to know how to- and have- had the jobs of the people below them. In the U.S., promotions are more often tied to performance and specialization — someone can rise quickly without ever having done the jobs below them. Side note because this forum is the internet equivalent of a witch trial: I’m not saying this system is objectively better. Because it does have some pretty serious flaws (like how the driving brains of young people have little to no cultural leg up in the workplace). But it is notably different.
