(As a Liberal): we need to reclaim patriotism. Yes we recognize the wrongdoings of the past but we need to unite and grow. America isn’t just a history but also a people and identity. It’s who we are.

(Centrist) totally agree. Patriotism to me is being united together for our country and our diversity.

Now that you watched our country commit genocide in Palestine after bombing the Middle East for 40 years, NOW you want to reclaim patriotism? What is wrong with you?

Fuck patriotism. I don’t owe a fucking thing to our flag or the people who run our country. Patriotism is just cultism by another name.

That’s your opinion but like it or not you benefited from being an American. You don’t owe it the people who run this country but you owe it to the people who live here and will live here in the future (immigrant or native born). We have a responsibility to pay it forward to those people as all people did before us.

We also have a responsibility to reconcile the damages our nation caused. While we may not have been the ones to cause the damage, we inherited the benefits.

I’d love nothing more than to see this country collapse.

Then you are an anarchist and should have nothing to do with any nation in general.

There’s a difference between nationalism and patriotism

Patriotism means to understand your country’s faults and acknowledge wrongdoings so that you can wave the flag out of hope that our country will actually do what it claims to stand for (liberty and justice for all) If everyone followed your logic you wouldn’t see a single black person or Irish or Italian or woman waving an American flag at all. Nationalism is evil. It’s what made the Lebanese and Yemeni Arabs in Dearborn whose home countries we’ve been bombing vote trump.

I don’t even think that was nationalism. They were simply misled and lied to. Why the fuck would Yemenis vote for the person who armed Saudi Arabia throughout his presidency?

I am barely in my 20s. And as #6 said, patriotism means (or should mean) accepting our faults and doing better. This is something I’ve learned from my family who are refugees from the Vietnam war who are personally aware of both the horrible and amazing aspects of the United States.

I’m not here to defend our involvement in Palestine or many other places remotely but it is beyond clear to me that a path to righting our wrongs does not start with us hating ourselves or hating our shared identity

you are an American by the fact that you grew up (or immigrated here as immigrants are Americans). We are more than a government but a people. It’s my people and your people. We have a responsibility to do right by our people and right the wrongs of our peoples past. This includes Palestine which we (and others) have horribly wronged. They deserve peace and their own state (and probably reconstruction reparations).

Patriotism has a definition already. There’s no need for you to try to define it.
