That’s your opinion but like it or not you benefited from being an American. You don’t owe it the people who run this country but you owe it to the people who live here and will live here in the future (immigrant or native born). We have a responsibility to pay it forward to those people as all people did before us.
Patriotism means to understand your country’s faults and acknowledge wrongdoings so that you can wave the flag out of hope that our country will actually do what it claims to stand for (liberty and justice for all) If everyone followed your logic you wouldn’t see a single black person or Irish or Italian or woman waving an American flag at all. Nationalism is evil. It’s what made the Lebanese and Yemeni Arabs in Dearborn whose home countries we’ve been bombing vote trump.
I am barely in my 20s. And as #6 said, patriotism means (or should mean) accepting our faults and doing better. This is something I’ve learned from my family who are refugees from the Vietnam war who are personally aware of both the horrible and amazing aspects of the United States.
you are an American by the fact that you grew up (or immigrated here as immigrants are Americans). We are more than a government but a people. It’s my people and your people. We have a responsibility to do right by our people and right the wrongs of our peoples past. This includes Palestine which we (and others) have horribly wronged. They deserve peace and their own state (and probably reconstruction reparations).
