Rap music isn’t a detriment to Black people. It is a reflection of society. It’s an art depicting experience. If you hate that a rapper raps about robbing at 13 then create a society where they don’t have to rob at 13.

Vince Staples has some incredible commentary on these things that has the listener walking the line between mindless vibing and deep contemplation on the systems that make life possible in Northside Long Beach, as Staples describes so lovingly.

the interlude of “Nameless” right before that song hits incredibly hard, it makes me tear up nearly every time. he’s been on a legendary run with the last three albums and he’s got a fourth coming soon. last one was called Dark Times with songs like “Étouffée” and “Government Cheese” that have similar commentary on life out there.

reminds me of of a Thundercat song called “Walk On By” where Kendrick Lamar’s verse has a line that says “Nine times out of ten, Y/N are 9 & 10 when the line becomes thin — be a killer or fireman?” 😞
