Insulin is $25 a vial at Walmart. It would be even cheaper if the FDA allowed competition to enter the market.

Why don’t they provide evidence that competition brings down the price of drugs? Theyre the one that made that claim with literally zero backing. What, do you want me to go out and find contradictory evidence for this loser to ignore?

So what I’m doing is different because I’m criticizing you on your apparently incredible lack of economic knowledge. Competitions effect on pricing is genuinely basic information. Here is an AI summary of what it is, I’m sure I can find more if you need more evidence. Please let me know if you would like a more in depth explanation.

Dude seriously - it’s a foundational principle of how free markets (like America) operate. I can find you a more in depth explanation if you’d like, but given your level of expertise a layman’s explanation was the best course of action.

So actually the reason why drugs are often very expensive is because they are patented by drug companies, who then have exclusive rights to produce and sell the drug to the public. If it is a drug that is required by people to live (insulin) unethical companies will jack up the prices. Because no one else is selling it, this leads to only the extremely exploitative and unethical company’s version being the only one on the market

Because there isn’t enough competition in the market. It’s a root cause of a lot of issues. Note I said “a” root cause, not THE.

You know to stop monopolies we had to make the market less free, right?

You could have started by asking for evidence. What evidence would help convince you? A page from an economics textbook? Quotes from experts? A peer reviewed study? An analysis by the FDA itself?

Novolin is an older kind of insulin. That one’s totally fine, but it’s not easy to switch between insulins safely. They last for various lengths of time. The newer ones are the ones that are super pricey. This is a much more complicated issue than just “allow competition” — competition is allowed as long as it doesn’t violate a patent. That’s an issue I’m happy to explain further if you want

Patent law and monopolies are part of the free market, which is why it’s important for the government to play referee and prevent exploitation of Americans by monopolies.

See, now that’s the unfounded attack on character we were talking about earlier. Also - I’m not anti monopoly in principle. Some monopolies are necessary, like a power company’s monopoly over a certain area. I think harmful monopolies should be regulated, however, to be non harmful. Also - everyone knows being a cuck is leftist-coded

This is why you can’t switch easily between insulin types btw, and not everyone is on Novolin. Novolin is NPH (aka isophane insulin). Novolog, for example, is made by the same company (Novo Nordisk, manufacturer of Ozempic). That’s insulin aspart

This is how you should have responded imo: Competition *should* bring down the cost of something, in theory. But the barrier to entry is high. Drug companies don’t want to invest the money in making cheap insulin because they won’t see a significant return on it. 90% of the insulin market is controlled by Sanofi, Eli Lilly, and Novo Nordisk, and they have two tactics that they love using: raising their prices in lockstep with each other and making small changes and patenting them, thus…

The barrier to entry that you’re referring to is the federal approval process. We’d have significantly more competition without the FDA making it extremely difficult to enter the market.

The other is creating the infrastructure to actually make insulin. It’s not cheap to make unless you can produce it at scale, and companies like Merck tried and gave up. It’s likely that the big 3 will try to undercut your pricing if you try to compete with them https://www.fiercepharma.com/pharma/merck-ditches-biosimilar-lantus-but-will-ease-path-for-mylan-s-rival-insulin-product
