Trump: guys don’t worry don’t worry ozempic is only gonna cost a dollar now Americans: … what about insulin? Trump: … Trump: OZEMPIC IS GONNA BE DIRT CHEAP FOLKSSo what I’m doing is different because I’m criticizing you on your apparently incredible lack of economic knowledge. Competitions effect on pricing is genuinely basic information. Here is an AI summary of what it is, I’m sure I can find more if you need more evidence. Please let me know if you would like a more in depth explanation.
I’m going to be serious for the future of this conversation - I will try my best not to speak down to you. I highly recommend taking a macroeconomics course at whatever college you are attending. The information you learn is very important to how our society functions.
So actually the reason why drugs are often very expensive is because they are patented by drug companies, who then have exclusive rights to produce and sell the drug to the public. If it is a drug that is required by people to live (insulin) unethical companies will jack up the prices. Because no one else is selling it, this leads to only the extremely exploitative and unethical company’s version being the only one on the market
Novolin is an older kind of insulin. That one’s totally fine, but it’s not easy to switch between insulins safely. They last for various lengths of time. The newer ones are the ones that are super pricey. This is a much more complicated issue than just “allow competition” — competition is allowed as long as it doesn’t violate a patent. That’s an issue I’m happy to explain further if you want
See, now that’s the unfounded attack on character we were talking about earlier. Also - I’m not anti monopoly in principle. Some monopolies are necessary, like a power company’s monopoly over a certain area. I think harmful monopolies should be regulated, however, to be non harmful. Also - everyone knows being a cuck is leftist-coded
Uuuuhhhhhhhhhhhhh Cope and seethe? Idk man you’re kind of just raging rn and it’s hard to take you seriously. You should put the phone down and chill out to think. Being angry at me and calling me a cuck will barely make you feel any better, and I don’t super care. You seem like you’re done pretending to be reasonable anyway, so I’m going to exit the convo. Have a nice day
This is how you should have responded imo: Competition *should* bring down the cost of something, in theory. But the barrier to entry is high. Drug companies don’t want to invest the money in making cheap insulin because they won’t see a significant return on it. 90% of the insulin market is controlled by Sanofi, Eli Lilly, and Novo Nordisk, and they have two tactics that they love using: raising their prices in lockstep with each other and making small changes and patenting them, thus…
The other is creating the infrastructure to actually make insulin. It’s not cheap to make unless you can produce it at scale, and companies like Merck tried and gave up. It’s likely that the big 3 will try to undercut your pricing if you try to compete with them https://www.fiercepharma.com/pharma/merck-ditches-biosimilar-lantus-but-will-ease-path-for-mylan-s-rival-insulin-product
