This neglects to mention that the British intentionally amplified tensions between Hindus and Muslims as a way to weaken Indian independence movements. By portraying Muslims as foreigners, the British could weaken resistance against their own rule, and could prevent Hindu-Muslim cooperation. Look to the 1905 partition of Bengal. Furthermore, much of the anti-Muslim sentiment in modern India is driven by Hindu Nationalist politics which see all non-Hindus as being non-Indians.
