Dems are a lot more progressive now so I agree, but in the US as a whole Manchin’s moderate views could swing a good amount of conservatives. The fact he won West Virginia as a Democrat still shocks me.

Trump won the whole US and still hasn’t done a thing to help working people. Manchin would at least win over most of the centrists and Democrats usually do the “vote blue no matter who” so he would easily win for the simple fact Democrats don’t want another Republican conservative president.

While I hold progressive ideologies myself, it’s a simple fact that most of this country does not like progressivism. Most democrats keep running on a highly progressive platform that is pushing out voters. The 2024 election demographics should tell you that. Historically, the younger generation and Latinos are strongly liberal, but this was not the case with Gen Z and Latinos this election.

I frankly don’t think the issue with democrats is that they aren’t appealing to weird centrists and dudebros enough. However, even if that were the case, manchin isnt the answer. The guy is famous for most democrats hating his guts, you would get a massive drop in democrat voting in the hopes that a few centrists don’t vote for white supremacist republican #16. And manchin hasn’t even done anything notable except be an obstacle.

If you wanted a moderate democrat (which I think we absolutely don’t want) pick someone like Andy Beshear. Someone who actually is accomplished and isn’t famously hated by everyone left of Clinton.

And I think when we give into the rhetoric that democrats have been “highly progressive” that kind of just gives in to Republican falsehoods. Mamdani is highly progressive. Most Democrats are milquetoast centrists who get called Lenin incarnate by republicans for being left of Strom Thurmond

Someone as bad as manchin I think would disrupt so many democrat voters that it would not be worth whatever uptick in centrists you get. It’s not even just the very progressive ones that hate the guy.
