Unfortunately the PDPA never had a mass base beyond Kabul, and they made a bunch of stupid decisions and begged the Soviets to bail them out when the peasantry turned against them

The DRA was established by an internal coup, not foreign intervention. It was the US-backed mujahideen that overthrew it
