i’ll never understand people who blame the voters for not voting for a candidate than the candidate themself for not listening to the ppl’s demands. our founding fathers fought for candidates to represent the ppl, not the ppl representing the candidate.

Ahhhh. So Trump represents the people? He listened to people’s demands? He spewed vitriol and hateful rhetoric and they slurped it up like room temperature Natty Light

I think it might have to do with the modern “football team” attitude some people have towards politics, mostly republicans

Democracy requires that people are involved with the process. Even in a badly damaged democracy I think it’s un-American to refuse to participate, especially when you have the chance to potentially reduce real harm.

Oh yeah, honestly it might just be a consequence on a 2 party system

i didn’t say he represents the ppl, he definitely doesn’t. i’m just saying it’s not good that voters sacrifice their own demands in order to be in line with their preferred candidate, and voters from both parties have fallen victim to that (most republicans as #1 said)

like you’re getting at what i’m saying. a lot of voters aren’t even thinking for themselves and the public but just cheering on anything their candidate says or does.

i agree that democracy requires participation, but it is more than voting. many of the most important democratic changes in the u.s. came through protest and public pressure when leaders failed to act. like in 1963, thousands of black mississippians cast mock ballots in the ‘freedom vote’ to challenge disenfranchisement. using the vote this way is a legitimate form of democratic resistance when leaders won’t listen.

Sure but I think that’s outside of the scope of your post. I think it’s right to say that people have a responsibility to vote just like it’s also right to say that people have a responsibility to do more if their democracy starts to falter like it is now

in what way is that outside of the scope of my post? when neither of your candidates are willing to listen to the majority’s demands what do we do? vote anyways?

we can continue to vote for those who cause the least harm but it’s going to get to a point where what was harmful before becomes the safer alternative and the threshold will be shoved closer and closer to the right.

Yeah I’m just saying it has to start from voting and go from there. Not voting is not an option. You vote for harm reduction first then you see what you can do about actually forcing candidates to care about what people want. There are dead people who would still be alive right now if we had defeated trump in favor of a less bad candidate

But I do agree that we desperately need to intervene. Without intervention the Democratic Party becomes closer and closer to alt right itself, as we’ve already seen

fair enough i appreciate your point. i still think that we need to hold the dnc more accountable but i shouldn’t rid voters entirely of responsibility

Sorry yeah if I didn’t express it well enough I meant to; we absolutely need to hold the dnc accountable. It has no resemblance to a workers party or a true progressive party whatsoever.

Are you involved with any grassroots governmental reform movements? I want to get more involved but I haven’t had the info/energy
