This is basically the top four for literally anyone who studies history lol. All my professors always point to one of these four

Lbj and Jefferson usually swing just behind them in rankings too

Jefferson is easily top 10 but FDR met the moment he was in better than anyone except Lincoln imo

Fuck no, Jefferson was a bad president. His political ideas were never viable. If he had his way the US would today be a third world backwater. Also he’s a child rapist. Meanwhile FDR was the best president in history regarding the needs of actual regular Americans.

Above-average with Truman and Eisenhower. Healthcare reform, the Iran nuclear deal (RIP), economic recovery from recession, gay marriage legalized, makes him impactful

That’s fair yeah. The one thing I can never get over with FDR is the internment of Japanese Americans during WW2… an often overlooked but VERY ugly splotch on his record.

TJ is definitely a top 10 president. It’s also hard to compare really because the country was so new that it’s hard to compare those early guys who were just trying to keep America together. He really defined the American identity at the time though AND through the Louisiana purchase he negotiated he doubled the size of the country. He would also be considered a libertarian under today’s standards which is definitely a positive.

Have criticism too, I don’t think he met the moment with the Arab Spring, Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, partisan gridlock was a major problem

Taft is underrated. He gets an above-average from me

Spoke to #1 about TJ but LBJ is a hard one for me. I see the 2022 Siena college survey had him ranked #1 out of ALL presidents for his relationship with Congress, but 39th for foreign policy accomplishments. This paints a complex picture

LBJ was godawful on international issues, Vietnam was an unmitigated disaster and he holds a big chunk of the blame. However domestically if they’d been continued and expanded his domestic agenda wasn’t bad.

The disaster that was Vietnam is his legacy, but civil rights is his big achievement. Great Society was also big. Idk what to think of him

I could imagine how badly divided the country was in the 60s over this stuff and tbh I’m kinda glad it’s behind us
