throwback to that time I was on a cane from being hit by a car the night before a anti-rape protest and shouted in a cop’s face that he was a pig and didn’t get touched because what kinda asshole would beat on the guy who already can’t walk lmao

Honestly a cop would do this and then claim they thought the cane was a weapon 😭

He threatened to arrest me and I told him that if he arrested me for nothing but my words “I’d have a 1983 lawsuit on his desk before I even made bail” because I know my shit and he just told me to fuck off and continued trying to disperse the crowd by just asking them to disperse

and unfortunately the protest organizers were inexperienced and liberal so they wanted to capitulate to the cops and got mad at me for being so confrontational

“1983 lawsuit” is in reference to US Code Section 1983, which allows you to sue an individual cop PERSONALLY for a violation of your civil rights that was out of line with department-wide policy rather than the usual route of suing the city, so cops fear that number.

One of my professors was a defense lawyer who taught like one class on the judiciary as his 2nd job, and he went on a whole tangent about 1983 suits in class one day lmao

Because someone had brought up qualified immunity and how it protects cops from individual consequences and he was like “well, there is one weapon you have against individual cops that act badly…”
