if the people in the communities, the people who determine history, decide that a ‘monument’ is an unfit portrayal of history, they should be able to remove said monument. states like SC, states with legacies in white supremacy they wish to preserve, deny local communities the right to determine their history. the monuments are imposed upon local communities by force, as a display of power, and they’re also defended by the state
and they were all built in the 1950s, when states like SC were trying to demonstrate a white southern nationalism. they were built by a white supremacist elite with a vested interest in painting the atrocities committed by white supremacy and colonialism in a positive light
Can you think of a good reason we should have statues to honor individuals who supported confederate ideals? Like yeah I think if you said in a historical context Robert E Lee was a good general in a video or something then that’s fine but I feel like having a statue to that is like having a statue of hitler
