Most documentaries are made by small, independent film makers and then sold to larger companies for distribution after premiering on the festival circuit.

True Crime Bullsh*t did it better than any documentary ever will.

Agreed. Crime Junkie did an amazing episode on him

Crime Junkie are plagiarists. I definitely won’t be checking them out. They literally stole my aunt’s newspaper article from 2002 and read it word for word without giving her credit.

I’ve heard about those plagiarism claims before, and that definitely sucks if it’s true. I still enjoy their storytelling, but I get why it rubs people the wrong way. Hopefully they’re doing better about crediting sources now

TCBS covered Keyes across 4 seasons of roughly 80 episodes. I’m sure that’s what they listened to in order to write her script outline. Ashley is a scumbag, and I can’t support that shit.

Yeah; they stole her article on the Kacie Woodey murder in my hometown—literally read it verbatim and added nothing. Never mentioned my aunt nor the paper she worked for. When they got called out for it, they tried to scrub the episode from the internet and pretend like it never happened. Sleaziest shit I’ve ever seen in the podcast world.

Yeah. Sometimes I just want something quick and easy to follow, even if it’s not the deepest dive. Doesn’t mean I co-sign everything Ashley’s ever done.

I just listened to the Kacie Woody episode last night, they haven’t erased the episode? Wdym they tried to scrub the episode from the internet?

They recently re-uploaded it, then. They took it down as soon as my aunt’s lawyers contacted them. You can find the story all over the place.

My older sister was in Kacie’s class, and she nearly went ballistic after that plagiarism shit happened.

Ohhh got it got it. Damn I didn’t know that. They definitely should’ve given the right sources rather than beat around the bush with it

Shit i would too, especially being, in a way, directly affected by everything that happened

That’s her entire business model: find obscure or old articles written by retired journalists, make dumb jokes with Britt while she steals it with her ASMR voice, and hope no one notices. When they do notice, delete and never acknowledge it, apologize, nor change behavior.

But yeah, so that house she was in when the her and her friend heard the floorboards creaking and went to hide in the closet? I drive by it every single day. Her dad and brother still live there. So sad.

Are there any crime podcasts that you would recommend? I mainly listen on Spotify, I heard about this one called Morbid but I haven’t looked into it yet

I couldn’t imagine still living in that house after everything. I think that would keep me up at night for the rest of my life if i’m being honest. I’m the oldest of 4 kids. I remember drilling into their heads about being safe on the internet when they were younger and just starting to get their own phones and laptops. Stories like hers hit really close to home because it can happen to anyone, especially those as young as she was

I’m really into the deep dive shit. The only new episode-new case ones I really like are Trace Evidence, The Trail Went Cold, and Casefile. They all do pretty solid research, credit sources, and are reliable with their content. The voices are all pretty different. I’m a sucker for the casefile guy’s Australian accent. Morbid is a bit too unnecessarily gory for my taste. But I know a lot of people like it. I’m a very research-minded person rather than narrative or shock.

Yeah, it happened before I was born, but it’s still a pretty big shadow over our entire town. Her brother got really bad into drugs for a while (understandably), but now he’s doing very well. Her Dad retired from the police force and become a heavy alcoholic—still fighting that battle. But I don’t think that’s one I’d ever be able to move past, personally. Especially being a cop.

LOL i heard Casefile is good. I like deep dives but my attention span can get a bit bored of it sometimes, so if i listen to deep dive stuff it has to still keep me hooked and engaged. I definitely will try those out though because i’ve been meaning to find new crime podcasts anyway. This was all the more reason to find a new one now

Oh, I forgot about The Vanished (Jillian somebody, I think, is the host). It’s not really true crime so much as unsolved missing persons. I like her production style, as it relies exclusively on interviews with family and friends. It feels very personal and seems to come from a genuine place of wanting to help. It’s not the best, but I’ve listened to every episode.

I don’t really blame either of them. Her brother lost a mom and a little sister, and her dad lost a daughter and his wife. My girlfriend is a police officer. I tell her all the time when we have kids that if something like this happens, we need to lean on each other. I think being in law enforcement with something like that could have made it worse. People say i’m crazy for thinking that but I mean…how can you not? Anything is possible especially with the lunatics in our world today

I love unsolved missing person cases too! I’m a huge fan of the lesser known cases, especially when the hosts are doing it to keep the case alive and spread awareness

Yeah, I mean the klan is still active around here, so it’s not like the world is any safer than it was in 2002. If anything, it’s probably worse.

Yup same here, i’m a SC native. It sucks that my girlfriend and I have to keep one eye over our shoulder if we go anywhere remotely rural around here. Especially bc my girlfriend is black

Yeah it’s not the best, luckily we live in a highly populated, blue city so it’s not that bad here. But if we ever get to more rural areas, we keep our head on a swivel if we have to stop anywhere that makes our gut clench

Or at least plan accordingly. It takes about 4 hours to drive through the whole state.
