Reason I’m against taxing churches: they aren’t getting paid, it’s all donations. You don’t tax donations. It’s also a religious group which grants it certain right and protections which I believe we should keep in place and use to our advantage with other religious groups like the satanic temple does.
lol right? It took my church 9 months to raise enough money to be able to afford a new HVAC system. My childhood church can’t even afford to pay the salary of a pastor so they rely on a synod-paid interim for 6 years. Yet there’s another church in the area that just built a 4th extension the size of a stadium, another that bought an entire strip mall to operate out of, and they all have multimillionaire pastors with lake house mansions
That’s very valid. Once it starts to make excessive profit, i think it would be valid for them to have to donate extras or pay taxes on them. The church I grew up in would use extra money to help pay for house repairs in struggling neighborhoods locally and help families with sick parents get by or pay for medical bills. I fully believe that that’s how all churches or religious organizations should operate too
I mean we already have those guidelines with all public nonprofits/charities. Religious centers fall under this category, the IRS just fails to actually enforce the “further the organizations purpose” clause of the 501(c) tax exemption status. Furthering the purpose of the church is pretty clearly defined in doctrine, and I don’t think billionaire pastors is included in there. Simple audits would solve a lot of the mega church issues, but they’re terrified of the image that creates. Publicity
