There’s literally a law (American Service-Members' Protection Act) that authorizes the president to use “all means necessary and appropriate to bring about the release of any U.S. or allied personnel being detained or imprisoned by, on behalf of, or at the request of the International Criminal Court.” The government literally passed a law in 2002 that says to invade the Netherlands rather than let Americans be tried for war crimes.
Iran issued a warning, saying they’d hit desalination plants if we hit their energy grid. We hit the energy grid yesterday, so they began hitting desalination plants in Kuwait. I don’t think the US really even cares about the gulf states not having drinkable water. It would just give them a reason to join us, which is exactly what our administration wants. Iran hit desalination plants first, which makes it easier for the US to justify slamming Iran’s. Still a war crime though.
But energy grid attacks are not a war crimes. They're one of the pillars of successful defense and offense. Anything an opponent does in war is fair game. Had Iran retaliated on energy grids there would be no issue. They stepped it up, and we responded. Nothing wrong with US response there.
