If your only justification for expecting sympathy is “he had a family,” it sounds like maybe he wasn’t that great of a guy on his own

Giving sympathy isn’t something that easily falls under a blanket of yes we should or no we shouldn’t based off character. Sympathy or empathy toward something should be based off of your moral compass and respect to someone despite differences. It should also be known these are most typically derived from your emotional intimacy toward something. It should be known that you would not show the same level of sympathy during the death of my family as my friends. Or vice versa…

I go for he had a family because not everyone supported him and I know he wouldn’t get sympathy for that, but his family never did anything wrong and deserves it.

Maybe you aren’t that great of a guy if you think the fact that he has young kids isn’t a good enough reason for him to not be shot and killed in public bc of his political views

I never said he should have gone like that, but that’s the most sympathy I can muster for Kirk specifically. And we still don’t know the specific motive

His kids absolutely deserve sympathy in this whole situation, but those are entirely different people who haven’t made their lives about trivializing brutality.

Oh, I absolutely agree, but sympathy for the family is separate from sympathy for Kirk.
