the “party switch” narrative is a simplification but in certain respects yes democrats got economically liberal before they got socially liberal. FDR probably would not be considered socially super in line with the Democratic Party today even though the New Deal would still fit into the platform
GOP also didn’t used to be anti-government… Reagan once changed the way we packaged everything bc 6 people died. Today 6 people die and we call it a “pretty normal Tuesday.” Nixon created OSHA and the EPA. Eisenhower started a space race, built interstates, expanded Public Power Districts, & passed the most progressive taxes *ever.* Taft broke Standard Oil into dozens of competitors when they got too fat & greedy. Republican didn’t used to mean “tread on me daddy billionaire!”
As it’s been with history since we first started writing things down as a species, it’s complicated. History isn’t usually black and white and has quite a bit of gray but the party switch is an undeniable historical fact supported by every historian worth a damn since it happened. It just irks me seeing people who probably made a D in high school history claim the party switch isn’t real
