I tried Linux on my laptop and it made me want to delete windows an replace my iPhone with graphiteOS. I switched to Stremio and it made me want to delete all my other streaming options Now I’m even questioning how useful my Amazon prime subscription is

Amazon prime is good for consumerism but not fantastic for durable goods (i go thrifting when i have the funds/time) but yeah lol daily driving a Linux machine makes you go “hmm the standard is shit, actually”

What hardware are you running graphiteOS on?

I’m not. I haven’t switched yet, but I really want to. I just can’t afford to buy a phone right now. Also, I wrote graphiteOS but I meant grapheneOS😅

They’re all the same. Every corporate publicly traded os or app is just complete garbage.

At least in terms of user experience

I also switched from google to proton for emails and most of my file storage needs. My only complaint so far is that proton doesn’t have an option to stream or preview files without completely downloading them. I might eventually try hosting my own media library too. Probably just on one of the privacy focused cloud services through VLC media player.

ngl setting up a home server isn’t extremely difficult. I’d also recommend learning about the 3-2-1 backup mnemonic

I thought about having a home server, and maybe one day if it’s convenient, but like the whole reason I put anything on cloud storage is because I’m worried one day my house will be swept up in a hurricane or something, and then all my files are just gone permanently, so I really want something stored offsite.

3-2-1 !! Anything important should have 3 copies, on 2 different storage devices, 1 stored “”off site”” for me this means working copy + backups on the disk + backups in the cloud

I got a Synology NAS and used the Synology C2 backup service (it was slightly cheaper than Backblaze, and I think AWS can get super costly if you don’t manage it properly and use the default settings). Works like a charm. I use it only for macOS backups but there are apps for email, photos, movies, etc

Nextcloud looks good also for email, photos, movies, etc

Yeah, but I mean like if your cloud storage is a home server, then that’s still in your house. I don’t have anywhere else to build it, lol. Right now I have everything backed up to my proton storage, along with some copies on my portable SSDs that I happened to already have. I might replace those with a home server one day, but for now I think I’m fine.

And also, even if it’s just for a media library, I’m still a little iffy on that, because if my power goes out at home or something while I’m traveling, then I just lose access to my files until I’m able to get back home
