You mean the Republican Party before the swap?

The Democratic Party was the Conservative Party at the time. The Republican Party explicitly courted all those racist voters through the southern strategy after they got mad that the democrats passed civil rights legislation.

There would have been no party switch if all the racists didn’t become Republican. Strom Thurmond is one of the best examples.
