My grandma was raised in a farm house with dirt floors until the 60s. Her husband walked 7 miles to campus every day to get his degree to support my grandma and aunts and build their house and farm. She still works at 75 to support the family since he died in the 90s while my youngest aunt was still in high school. My dad grew up in a 1 bedroom shack in a poor community. My parents had good jobs and money until my mom got cancer and had to retire and my dad had to quit to take care of her.
just realized i didnt even read this post fully. i have an interesting experience tho cause on my dads side they came over pretty well off from germany. they lost it all tho. my paternal grandparents were super broke stoner hippies. on my moms side they came over from a small fishing village and experienced racism and discrimination for a little bit. they grinded HARD tho and my grandfather is now very well off
i got my school paid for so thats a perk, and i went on vacations as a kid and i feel like thats helped me out a lot in life, but theyre so fucking cheap anytime we’d travel we’d have ti turn our phones off so we dont GOD FORBID accidentally get a 50 cent per minute phone call bill
Government denied her social security for 10 years and taxed most of the backpay when she was finally awarded it. Trump just changed taxes so she pays more from what little she gets now. My families have been in the US since the colonies and immigration documentation, immigrating with just the clothes on their backs to avoid being killed by their home counties governments. But yeah, our fault we don’t have money
Your grandma has land and property, which is more than a lot of people who’ve been here just as long have. Your situation is horrible, but other family members could’ve worked together to help her, which is a separate issue. My point is that I understand having nothing if your family immigrated here one generation ago, but after 2+ generations in the US, how does a family still have nothing to show for it?
shit happens man. getting sick or just meeting misfortune in general and set back any amount of progress also, not everyone naturally wants to go into fields that make a lot of money. u cant fault someone for going into education over say investment banking even tho one clearly makes more money
Land and property doesn’t mean shit when you pay more in property taxes than she can save in a year. And what other family members? Dad’s sister is dead. Mom’s older sister’s wife is dying of metastatic cancer and they pay for twice weekly chemo, radiation, and experimental treatments, mom’s younger sister fled an abusive marriage and owes thousands in court fees and current husband barely makes enough to keep their home.
my moms side grinded and successfully built generational wealth cause my grandfather was a finance wiz. on my dad’s side my grandfather was drafted to vietnam at 18 and came back a stoner with no money and no hope. idk what the fam was like before him but ik my dad was poor as fuck cause of it
Let’s also not forget 3 generations ago the Great Depression that caused many people to lose EVERYTHING. I actually recently found my great grandma’s parents bank book when we cleaned out her house after she died (lived to 101, and needed 24 hour medical care, imagine how much that costs the family), and saw the last entry a week before the stock market crash. They lost EVERYTHING. Great grandpa drove the school bus for a literal penny a day while also keeping up the farm
I’m not talking about the small percentage of people with $200M+. I’m talking about people with $500K to $10M+. If your family has been here for 3 to 4 generations and collectively has less than $10K to show for it, that’s a HUGE problem. Even consistently putting small amounts into savings or investments over the years could’ve made a massive difference.
i think there’s just a lot that can go wrong and cause someone to lose their savings. we have several wars, economic collapses, businesses can bankrupt, people can get randomly fired, people can have unexpected or too many kids, someone can lose all their savings sending a family member to college, a lot can happen
