This feels slightly antisemitic but also are we bringing up the morals of the Old Testament? The “evil things” are mostly religious insubordination. The Old Testament God is very pro-genocide. One of those evil things the Israelites got punished for was not slaughtering all the sheep, cows, and king of the Amalekites after genociding the people (which God ordered them to do). They were punished for insufficient genocide.

Thanks for explaining my own book to me 👍 Also, the modern category of ethnicity isnt what thats talking about. Amalekite means those who participate in a particular way of life centered around Amalek. Its like saying an Epstienite, someone who participates in the things done on that island. The idea is that the island, and everyone who refuses to stop doing the things done there, need to be stopped, by force if necessary. And the Amalekites literally did do those things, institutionally.

The irony is that scripture actually says its not too hard. And people like David did it “The Lord will again delight in you and make you prosperous, just as he delighted in your ancestors, if you obey the Lord your God and keep his commands and decrees that are written in this Book of the Law and turn to the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. Now what I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach” Deuteronomy 30:10-11

The Law allows for ways to repent of sin, which David did. Loving God doesnt mean never screwing up, it means repenting of it when you fall. See this verse where God is talking to Solomon: 1 Kings 11:38: "If you listen to all that I command you and walk in My ways, and do what is right in My sight by observing My statutes and My commandments, as My servant David did, then I will be with you”
