people do not have an option. the south is full of effective single-party states. this was true when the Democratic party dominated and it’s still true today under Republican domination. Republicans either run unopposed, or their seat is contested by another Republican

No, as a southern Leftist living outside of the South it’s pretty rampant among grown people. The South has become a convenient rhetorical dumping ground for problems that are woven through the entire country. Imani Perry’s South to America and Nancy Isenberg’s White Trash both do really phenomenal jobs unpacking this.
