I applied for the same job as my former boss (unknowingly until one of us got the job) and we were both each other’s references. Typically, they’re not going to contact a reference if it’s a situation like that. But just in case, you might want to inform them Nd provide alternate reference as the last thing you want is your boss to give a bad reference because they’re salty you got further than they did.
