And it’s had some unfortunate social and economic consequences. It’d be great to have a one income standard and more of the adult population free to volunteer and build communities during the regular day. Free services only truly exist when people do work for free. Unfortunately, not many people want to do that. All I’m saying is volunteer more. Be the change you want to see.

This is due to ppl voting for less social programs tho tbh. I think such programs and communities should exist but we shouldn’t expect it for free although we can appreciate those who do free work. We should use our tax dollars for things like that to better help and improve our communities

Government programs do not build communities and inherently have perverse incentives as they are still driven by a paycheck and financial report. It’s a folly to think we can establish social programs to reconnect with our neighbors. What we need is genuine time interacting with each other and working towards a common goal. Money can’t buy that.

so you think women shouldn’t have had to be paid for their work? 🤔

Why does being paid to work a social program make it perverse?

Doesn’t matter if it is women or men. I think in the standard should have stayed that when people couple up, one person becomes the primary earner and the other utilizes their time towards building a better home and community around them.

Because then the work that the social programs is incentivized to do are the ones that the largest tax payers want to see. It’s still acting on behalf of the haves whether it’s obvious or not. Flowing money through the government doesn’t change that. Helping your elderly neighbor with her garden, for example, might be just what your community actually needs. Or maybe it’s someone providing trustworthy child care while a mom has to deal with the loss of a family member. Every community’s…

and anyway, you said women getting paid for the work they were ALREADY doing had “unfortunate social and economic consequences”. you made it about women, which is why I was talking about women. Don’t try to backtrack and say you meant men or women.

Needs are incredibly unique, and government programs cannot cater to these specifics. They can only offer blanket services that don’t actually meet people where they are. The most valuable thing we have is our time, and right now the expectation is for all of us to spend 40 hours/week of it outside of our communities. Third spaces died out because no one has the time and energy to create and maintain them anymore.

I’m not backtracking anything. That was just the social change at the time. And no, I think our current society’s norms are quite messed up and inhuman.

your whole argument relies on the idea that women weren’t already working before. They were working, they just weren’t paid. I think everyone should get paid for the work they do, and that women getting paid for work they were already doing is not a bad thing in any way. Saying one person in every couple should stay home is inhumane, and would lead to many women (and men, but we know w the patriarchy it would most likely be women) being stuck at home again even if it’s against their wishes.
