hi everyone do you have any tips on how to write better? i have always held the philosophy that if you just start on a blank page, you can eventually refine but i would like some real advice besides "just do it!" 🥹

Hi OP, carry a memo pad. Think about your story or what inspires you as you do things throughout the day. Any insights or ideas that come up write them down. In time you’ll form a brain storm and see where and how the creativity comes.

Write literal bullshit a lot. Literally any thoughts. It can just be random words that you think of. I have a journal full of things like “I went to my club with my friend today! I thought it was fun!” And that’s it. Like just start writing

shakespeares method of writing was to have two piles, one for good works and one for bad. he would try to write terribly, and in that process he’d accidentally write something good and be forced to keep it. something to try!

If you get stuck, write the worst draft you can imagine. Curse, make bad jokes, use improper grammar, whatever. Just get it down and you can fix it up later.

i always think of a certain tone you prefer to write or want to convey for x part. while you’re writing, try to channel those related emotions into the passage, and then revise as you need to match that specific tone. A big part of this method I use also relies on knowledge of how to achieve specific tones. for example, a spiral or a mania or a fixation could be portrayed by longer and longer sentences with a lack of punctuation that gives a certain feeling of urgency and sucks the reader in!
