The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka - man wakes up a bug one day and his family begrudingly "cares" for him until he eventually passes away. Message in how his family treats him when he was providing for them versus when they had to take care of him (hint hint, they didn't treat him well). It's a short read, relatively speaking. It's a novella (if I remember correctly), so weirdcore but not short film. I'm english major, not doing theater/arts stuff though.
Additionally, what was cool about Kafka's piece is that it starts almost comically--it would need to because it's a man turned bug (I think roach or something?)--but it ends very somberly and almost depressingly. He's lonely, uncared for, and believes his family would be better off without him.
