jumpscare: OP has revealed they asked this question in pursuit of answers about the ethics of selective breeding in humans (also known as eugenics, or “designer babies” as they worded it)
If you could get rid of your condition, would you? This is for science and is a judgment free zone.

It also seems very weird/ kind of disrespectful to ask that in this community. This group, for me anyway, is to vent and find support and it irritates me when people use it to try to use us for their own benefit

eugenics is not necessarily selective breeding but also includes selectively killing off undesirable embryos (not making any arguments just clarifying)

"how could you accuse me of being pro-eugenics?? I'm just asking other people if they really want to be ill or not so l can figure out which types of chronically ill people it would be better to breed out of existence entirely”

“this is why I asked the question. I study genetics and was recently pondering the ethics of designer babies for an assignment”

Hey commentator #1, it’s OP. To everyone else I explained myself in the comments of the original so please read that.

Uhhh..that’s not a terrible thing? Oh no I have multiple disabilities and I want to have kids; but I don’t want my kids to have the same issues as me, I’d gladly take out a loan to guarantee their health would be golden.

the other person taking their side was saying how I couldn’t understand why eugenics isn’t Actually “100% bad” because in order to be able to think on their level I would have to work in the same field as them. I am not physically well enough to work but personally I feel pretty confident in my take on the unethical nature of eugenics

did you just say “that’s not a terrible thing” about eugenics

holy shit. so you would abort a child strictly on the basis that they were predisposed to having the same illnesses as you…? if your parents had done that you wouldn’t exist, a different person would have been born

btw, please notice the volume of upvotes on my initial reply to you about eugenics, by contrast to how this community of chronically ill people has received your own thoughts on the subject. and ponder what that might mean

i broadly agree with you but at the same time if someone is not equipped or doesnt want to take care of a disabled child why would you encourage them to keep and tjen raise that child. like do u think that would be a good childhood… also the “what if you had been aborted” is like every pro life persons argument i think u may need to reconsider some of what you’re saying

if someone isn't prepared to care for a disabled child then it's irresponsible for them to reproduce, period. same goes for if their child turns out to be gay or trans—unwilling? don't have a kid and come on, give me a break, I am staunchly pro-choice and that is a separate conversation from literal selective breeding

replying to my own self because someone left a weirdly patronizing reply and then seems to have immediately blocked me

like just because you think my argument Sounds similar to an anti-abortion trope, you’re gonna write me off when I’m railing against full-blown eugenics…? rather than taking a second to read the words I wrote and comprehend them as-is minus the kneejerk judgment? I expect a little more good faith than that

them believing they know better than actual disabled people about literal eugenics and saying eugenics isn’t bad is SO on brand with my experience with healthcare workers it’s not even fucking funny. they said we’re not educated enough to see that no one wants us alive

Also like not all these conditions are hereditary, mine was triggered by a virus (Covid). Like if they genuinely wanted to research this shit, then they should be doing real research, not asking random anonymous strangers a question

yeah, real, I don’t actually want anybody invalidating them on that it’s just highly alarming how quick they are to try to separate themselves from other disabled folks they look down on, talking like those of us who don’t work in the medical field are incapable of sensible & informed perspectives on these issues

for sure, eugenics / eugenicist rhetoric takes a handful of different shapes some of the exchanges I’ve had on here these last couple days got me feeling defensive, legit appreciate you specifying that you’re elaborating rather than rejecting what I said

idk why this is being downvoted, I’m just referring to the fact that for instance genocide and selective breeding are both examples of eugenics because some amount of people hear “eugenics” and only think to associate it with the kind that involves slaughtering people who are already alive
