Do you think that other European populations commonly considered “white” don’t also have genetic influence from populations outside Europe? “White” is a fake construct but even the fake construct almost always includes Iberians.

No, they considered them to be Hispanic. And the fact that “white” is a fake construct is the whole reason people are disagreeing with the original post

Hispanic people can be any race. It’s a category of language.

No, back in the day it was a race

No. No one considered Spaniards a different race from French people. There was a racial category system in Latin America. “Mestizo” referred to people of mixed European and native American descent. “Criollos” and “peninsulares” meanwhile were of European ancestry.

Hispanic people can be of any ancestry. It’s about speaking Spanish. There’s Japanese Hispanics in Peru. There’s black Hispanics in Cuba. There’s German Hispanics in Argentina.

Your way of thinking about other races is very 21st century. Back during the colonial era, the population of Spain were hispanics, no one else. When they colonized the new world, they tried to classify the new group of Spanish and indigenous people as “Mexicans” and then named the country after them. But in no way would Europeans consider the Spanish to be the same race as the rest of Europe. They were most certainly considered to be distinct

Here’s a quote from the count of monte cristo written in 1840 about a village on the French-Spanish border “The Catalans, as we have said, were a race of men who had come from Spain, and who had settled in the little village which bears their name.”

Hispanics is a term we only use in the modern day as an ethnic identifier because Spain colonized the Americas and produced a large population of mixed ancestry. “Hispanics” wasn’t a separate race any more than “French” or “English”

“In no way would Europeans consider the Spanish to be the same race of the rest of Europe” and where in God’s Green Earth are you getting that from. That is so astoundingly ahistorical lol.

Bro THATS YOUR SOURCE FOR THIS????? “Race of people” in this context just refers to “this is a people group” bro I can find quotes exactly like that about Germans or Irish or English oh my god.

Bro the Spanish are a bunch of Catholic Europeans speaking a Romance language. They’re tan but the Portuguese fucking INVENTED white supremacy. AND they’ve always been considered white under US naturalization laws, which used to only allow white people to naturalize as U.S. citizens.

They aren’t “tan” they’re mixed with the Arab population that inhabited the region for over a century before the reconquista. Hispanic is not a modern concept, it’s been around for a very long time, stop trying to act like races can’t be discerned.

And the us naturalization laws considers them, as well as Arabs, to be CAUCASIAN. Because we all originated from settlements near Caucasus. Caucasian doesn’t mean “white”.

Spain has a fairly small amount of Arab genetic introgression due to the expulsion of most Muslims. It’s generally between 1% and 10%. Sicily in Italy has a similar range.

The U.S. naturalization act of 1790 said “free white persons.” Not caucasians. And literally no one ever tried to say that Spaniards weren’t white. Mixed race people in my state would literally claim to be Portuguese so they would be treated as white.

Like bro Spain is IN EUROPE. It’s inhabited by Latin language speakers. It’s Catholic. Those three categories together mean no one has ever tried to say they weren’t white. The Spanish called themselves white in colonial America. And again, the Portuguese literally invented white supremacy. That’d be really fucking weird if they weren’t white.

Dude you clearly don’t have any historical knowledge. I’m trying to be nice here but you’re literally fuming over this for no reason. The Spanish kicked out a very large percentage of their Muslim population after the colonizing was largely underway in the 1600s. That’s why it’s so low today
