yeah this might anger some people but it's coming from a gay man. women sexualize gay relationships and since a lot of women write fanfics it ends with a lot of M/M fics
all these amazing women in this show, some that are even canonically queer, with much more interesting dynamics than the ones between the men and between them and the men and yet this is what’s on ao3

Society in general has a hard time seeing male friendship and not romanticizing it

Not trying to hijack your post at all, because a lot of it is a sort of fetishization, but I also think internalized misogyny contributes to it too. After all, if you see women as lesser, why would you focus on them as characters when you could write about men? And then because they write gay men from a woman’s perspective they fetishize it more, and more people see it, and the male characters are elevated and twisted in this weird cycle to the point where the gay man isn’t even a person

And I understand that it often comes from a place of like, misplaced sexual expression. If they can’t express women’s eroticism they project it onto gay men in fanfic but like. That is still objectifying and we can Tell when it’s being used as a stand in.

Anymore, just a collection of traits that someone else preferred. It’s like breeding animals in a weird way- the extremes are selected for in fic, and the normal everyday humanity is lost This is a long ramble to say you’re right. Again, sorry for hijacking I’m not trying to be annoying I swear

i understand your point that you're making and i think it could be very valid. i don't write fanfic myself so it's hard for me to offer reasonings but one thing could be that gay men understand how it feels to be fetishized and written about in a wrong way so they don't do it themselves? i'm not saying you're wrong i agree that what you said makes sense. i appreciate the comment

I also think this has like, broken containment from just fanfic and has leaked into the broader ya romance genre as well because why can’t I find like, like pulpy romance that is actually written by a gay man when it used to have a huge market
