I love how you never knew about periods or puberty. Until one day in 5th grade you were brought in a room and watched a traumatizing video..

Had a whole argument with my parents about how I never had a proper sex education or period education and she was like i bought you that book^^. And so I should have had all the answers to the universe because of that book

This is exactly what my mom and my friends’ moms did for us they never gave us “the talk” they just gave us this book and said “figure it out”

REAL!! My sex ed came from this book and the internet lmao; I literally managed to hide that I had gotten my period from my mom for a year cuz of all the tips I got from American girl puberty book

Not in a weird way I had a similar book and just looked at the pictures, and I was so uneducated on shit I thought you could only get pregnant on your period up until I was 16. Books are not enough to educate 😔

I actually loved that book since it helped all my questions that my anxiety could ask

No because I loved these books. Yes tell me about how it can be uncomfortable, tell me I can start to grow hair and smell! It was so helpful as someone who was anxious to have so many questions and answers at my fingertips

My parents obviously gave me the talk and all, along with me going through sex education class in fifth grade and all that stuff, as well as this book. Must’ve been weird for them when I came out as aromatic after all of that. (Or I should say temporarily aromantic I guess??? Finally figured out that stuff when I was 13, made peace with it, then at 15 I became friends with the guy who is now my boyfriend and he kinda flipped everything upside down 🙃)

I am both glad and sad that this is not an experience unique to me… funniest thing is my mom has her masters in NURSING EDUCATION and she did, in fact , actively hold that degree when she gave me this 😂

That book is a good basis for period education but doesn’t cover medical conditions like PCOS nor does it explain any of the weird things that can happen during cycles like cysts. Also your parents thought a book produced by a doll company would cover sex education?

Are you from an agricultural background or town? Bcos I think that’s basically correct for most mammals. I knew a lot of people who grew up thinking that bcos we learned about breeding horses in elementary school and didn’t get sex ed until high school 🙂‍↕️

I still have my copy to this day as a matter of fact. Well, my parents do anyway. It’s in a box with some of my other old stuff in the loft of one of the storage barns. Lot of old books in that box aside from just this one, I’d say probably a 100% complete Magic Treehouse collection is up there too. Or at least up until about 2008.

I had a similar story. My mom bought the book but I never read it, and I woke up in a puddle of my own blood to period cramps when I was 11 and started screaming and crying that I was dying. 11 year old brain with little anatomy knowledge had thought something inside me ruptured and the blood was pooling out of me

For a really long time I was just embarrassed to have a body basically, like anything relating to my body was just mortifying, so I didn’t want to tell anyone that I had started puberty cuz I was like 8-9 years old and mortified (I eventually realized that having a body isn’t embarrassing lol)

No lmao I’m actually from a decently off area, near a major city. I already knew about periods though because my mom told me constantly about them, but I’ve never learned about animals breeding instead 😭😭
