the tiktok-ification of adhd, autism, etc. has led people to view genuine disabilities as silly quirks and actually led to more ableism when we show those disabilities
ok quote this with your hot takes (let’s stay respectful of each other though okayyyy!)

like i once had someone say “if you deal with the social aspects of autism” BITCH AUTISM IS A SOCIAL THING???? there’s no such thing as autism without social struggles. if you don’t struggle socially you don’t have autism. that’s like saying “if you deal with the anxious aspects of anxiety”

Or people thinking they can diagnose you because of Tik Tok. I’ve had people tell me I have autism when I don’t because one person on Tik tok said so.

also people romanticizing serious conditions that negatively affect people such as eating disorders, borderline personality disorder and ocd (and many others) harms so many people in the process

Yeah this is so interesting because I also thinks it’s due in part to there being so many more resources nowadays for therapy on coping mechanisms and stuff like that. I’m autistic and struggle socially but am VERY extroverted, and after I went through therapy you wouldn’t be able to externally tell 🤷‍♀️

Autism is partially a social thing, it is not exclusively a social thing. I’d an autistic person figures out scripts or patterns that work well for them socially they are still autistic

yeah but that’s still compensating for social struggles, it still affects that person socially they’re just able to mask or cope with it

its a weird line bc i do believe tiktok has led to more people realizing they’re autistic and getting the resources they need, like tiktok is what made me start pursuing a diagnosis. but that doesn’t mean you’re qualified to diagnose someone solely based on tiktok
