My hot take is that it's hypocritical to believe shit like this while also believing the age of consent should be older than 17
17 is not a kid. If a 17yo does something terrible, they’re damn well old enough to know the difference between right and wrong, and “He’s/She’s just a kid.” Doesn’t work on someone who is almost 20.

I agree. While 17 is still old enough to know what’s right or wrong, you’re still very young!! Mistakes are meant to happen at that age. Plus, the way how I am now compared to 17 is vastly different. Even being 20 is such a huge gap.

17 isn’t a kid, it’s a teenager, but no matter what you call it, 17 is still a minor and that’s the label that matters

I don’t know. I think it’s reasonable to have the aoc be kind of its own standard bc teens have had less time to understand/acclimate to their understanding of sex, because you really just CAN’T fully understand it until you go through puberty, even if you understand it on paper. But other things, like violence, injury, and safety, you can learn the first time you scrape your knee. Also part of the reason we need a cautiously-set age of consent is that kids are trained almost from birth to obey

and defer to adults, especially when it comes to decisions that are overwhelming or when in over their heads. It’s a jarring shift when as teenagers we require them to quickly adjust to the new reality that they’ll soon be solely responsible for EVERYTHING. Adults who prey on the underage exploit that adjustment period and we’re right not to tolerate that behavior even if we hold the same teenagers responsible for their actions in all other contexts
