NB person here, I’m just not a fan of most of the intentionally gender neutral language. I don’t like being called Latinx (Latine works better), Folx is just weird. I don’t need new words, there’s almost always a word that works already!
hot take: the word “folx” is so silly bc “folks” was already gender-neutral

i personally HATE “mx” as the neutral title. i’m a teacher and just go by miss 1)bc i think mx isn’t great and 2)it’s an immediate out in a profession where hostility towards queer acceptance is very common most neutral language just has too many x’s and feels clunky. nibling is nice tho for neutral niece/nephew

“Folx” is the silliest new word ever. Folks is, was, and always will be all-encompassing

I thought folx was just. A funny way to say folks 😭😭😭

Ngl, I didn’t know anyone was offended by it, I started using it once my gender studies prof told me it was correct 🫣 I’m not nb so I assumed it was a more polite or accurate spelling or something, sorry

That’s what I thought too and then I was told that it’s serious 😭

I’m not offended, but I just don’t like people speaking on my behalf. I don’t speak for all nb people, but I know a lot of this is put out by non nb/trans people with good intention but misunderstanding our needs

(Though Latinx I just don’t like, not necessarily offended by)

The difference between folks and folx is basically that folks is passively gender neutral while folx is explicitly gender neutral, if that makes sense. The x comes from the womxn movement but it’s a misappropriation of it imo because it was intended to be “fuck the gender binary” but it comes off more as “fuck people who identify with the gender binary”

But ☝️ that’s queer history that most people don’t know. Most of us, including myself, don’t like it bcos it’s fucking stupid and I don’t wanna be explicitly othered from people who identify with the binary + it was largely co-opted by white liberals desperately trying to virtue signal

That makes sense, I just don’t tend to like the active vs passive gender neutral unless there isn’t a passive word that works. I can’t explain it’s it just feels odd to me

That’s fair! I don’t want to be separated like that either, maybe it’s stupid to say but it feels like trying to turn the gender binary to a gender trinary, which isn’t better

It bothers me that folks is like the only English word to get gender-neutralized (besides womxn I guess) like this. Is it because it’s a southern word? Is it because people assume southerns can’t be accepting? I explicitly denounce “folx” cause it sounds like something a white person from NY who thinks everything is racist even when their POC friends say it’s not would come up with - southerners can be accepting too!

You would not BELIEVE how many times that some white cis person has told me (a nonbinary Californian) not to call people “Dude” because “it’s not gender neutral” 😭 (I’m aware it’s not the same, but it’s a common thing I’ve had to deal with lol)

Bruh I haven’t gotten that bcos I’m in the south but I have gotten middle aged cis white women telling me not to call them dude because they’re a woman (one woman literally said “I’m not a dude, I’m a dudettte” 💀) I’ve always said, if a trans person has an issue with gendered language that’s socially gender neutral, I will ABSOLUTELY respect that but it’s rarely the case

I’m afab nb and I do not give a single fuck if someone calls me girl or bitch or dude or bro. It’s different to call me *a* girl, but being like “GIRL guess what” is a non issue and I say the same shit. And if a cis man tells me not to call him girl I’m in fact going to call him girl way more. But!! If a gnc person or trans person tells me not to call them that I’ll absolutely respect their wishes bcos I have brain cells 🙂‍↕️

I’ve never heard of nibling lol, that’s probably the only one of those I’d ever use. I’m personally just getting my PhD for the neutral title so I can get away from mister without having to use mx lol. Typically I just insist my colleagues call me either by my first name or just my last without a title, idrc about “titles are respect” or whatever lol, I’m just here to do my job
