This is why I’m a firm believer that no one needs a pet while in college 99% of y’all can’t handle itIt really depends on the person. I’m bringing my dog with me next semester only because I’ll actually have space for him (I’ll be in a suite). If I was in a basic dorm then absolutely not. He acts like my ESA and also gets really depressed at home when I’m not there, which is why I’m bringing him. Some people just shouldn’t have pets in general because they are a LOT of work and responsibility. I don’t understand how people can even morally feel ok not properly taking care of their pet :(
My life REVOLVES around this little guy. I’ve had him since I was 10, and now I’m 24. All throughout college I made sure to have a job so he could have a warm bed. I moved into a house instead of a small apartment just for him to be able to run around as freely as possible. Oh and how I’ve had to borrow money so many times just so I could buy him food and litter. Because I can go a day without food, but he certainly shouldn’t. Cats can be a lot of work if you do it correctly
Yes omg in my sophomore year the apt above me had a husky puppy and they would leave it all day in the apt and walk it maybe 5 mins a day. They also would make it go to the bathroom on a pee pad on the deck above ours which had slits through it and the pee would drip down to our apt deck. Bare minimum is taking the dog outside to go to the bathroom 🙄
And also the thing about cats is they do in fact need more than the bare minimum which means daily play and affection in addition to proper food, space that includes preferably high places they can hang out on and places for them to hide in, etc. a taken care of kitty and a happy kitty are two very different things
my roommate got a puppy and she let it piss and shit everywhere for months bc she never took it outside, would leave it in her room for hours even while she was home bc she’d camp out downstairs while it would scream and cry in the room. so unbelievably annoying and just- wrong. like why are you even raising a puppy as a college student in the first place, and she is also an athlete. our apartment smelled like a barn all the time and she was constantly sick…wonder why!
I always thought I wanted a pet but also consciously knew that taking care of it would feel like an inconvenience and piss me off so I ✨didn’t✨ lol. More people need to do that type of reflection when it comes to pets bc yeah they are cute but like go visit pets don’t own them if you can’t commit to the work😭
i’m so against college kids having pets tbh. unless you live in a house or suitable space for it and you’re actually gonna make time for them, it’s cruel. i’ve noticed many people my age will get pets like they’re a shiny new toy and get annoyed and bored of them when they its more work than they realized🙄
As someone looking to maybe get a dog next year, I’ve done sm research. I would never bring a large dog into an apartment. Need small one, would either go thru puppy phase over summer or get an already adult dog, walk it regularly, can’t leave it inside for more than 6 hours. Need rigid routine…
Omigosh yes. Our old housemate/friend got one. They bought her, but would leave the house and not come back to feed her. :( Eventually, it escalated into them straight up abandoning her when they moved out. So we ended up having to adopt her. 😭 At least she’s our cutest orange lady! 🫶
Also pro tip for those of you suffering from roommates who won’t clean their litter boxes frequently enough: suggest pine pellets instead of regular litter! I get a 40 pound bag at tractor supply for $8 and it lasts my one cat a whole semester, it’s easier to clean and actually nullifies scent better than normal litter!
btw i regularly took him to the vet for his shots and also treated his ear infection and conjunctivitis (feline pink eye) after rescuing him from a bad owner but to clarify she called the cops claiming i never fed him after i asked her ONCE to feed him because i was gonna be home later than expected 😭
Giving people a talking-to usually doesn’t work. I’ve tried it before to no avail. I’ve ended up just stealing and rehoming the pet myself. Much more effective, and you can get them in trouble w the apartments if they try to replace bcos 99% of the time they don’t bother to update the animal on the lease
🙂↕️ I’m non confrontational but I simply won’t tolerate animal abuse so I’ve yoinked roommates pets, as well as helped friends yoink their roommates’ pets 🙂↕️ it’s a good idea to document the abuse in case they try to take you to court but also 1) most of them won’t bcos they don’t actually gaf abt the animal and 2) if you do it right, they’ll never know it was you 🤭
