I personally think they need to expand the age range Romeo and Juliet laws to encompass 16-20 or at least something with with age groupings that protect minors from themselves as well, but that’s honestly about as far as I go with things. Age of consent laws are good because they actually do protect minors from being exploited. People only think of the sex part and I don’t think they even get to the horrible situations a young person can be put in by simply existing in that kind of relationship.

That’s what I’m saying. Lowering the age of consent doesn’t protect minors at all if anything it endangers them more. If he’s trying to argue it should be lowered to “protect kids from themselves” then he should argue for them to not charge teenagers around the same age who sleep with each other, like I said. Ig what I said would encompass expanding Romeo and Juliet laws which I don’t necessarily disagree with

Just because a teenager CAN give consent doesn’t make it justifiable. Attraction is just a sliver of the problem. An established 20 year old getting with a 15 year IS a bad thing. That level of power dynamics SHOULD be illegal. That goes for the same with teachers and students for obvious reasons.

I mean I’m not going to defend “18 years” as a descriptive claim that anyone below that cannot consent….but I’ll definitely defend it as a normative claim as in it ought to be 18 years old because it seems like the best age of when we can claim someone is an adult. They’re done with school, they can work/have a job(full-time), they can live on their own, etc. Is there a 16 or 17 year old out there that could also? Probably, but the whole point is to say that 18 is the line we’ve chosen….

and there really isn’t any sort of societal benefit or wellbeing for either minors or adults to lower the age of consent. Just because someone can, doesn’t mean they should. 🤷‍♂️

I get that. I more so think it should be a little older than 18 just because 18 year olds are still immature and don’t always make the best choices. Ik I didn’t always. I do understand that they’re usually living on their own(maybe not in the economy😭) but I think we should also take mental maturity into consideration and I do understand there’s 40 year olds who are still immature

Consent isn’t something that magically appears much like a 17 year old suddenly turning 18 and now they’re instantly attractive. Age gap stuff(for legal consenting adults) is a fairly big societal more in regard to something like a 40 year old dating an 18 year old or something along those lines…………..

Age gaps aren’t illegal obviously but I believe there are some stipulations depending on states. For instance, in Michigan, I believe the age of consent is 16. That means they are functionally able to have sex with a 40 year old. The stipulation is that the older person cannot occupy a position of authority such as a teacher, administrator, cop, child care, fellow employee, etc.

Age gaps don’t necessarily bother me on a surface level, but I think it’s highly dependent on the situation. If a 20 year old, who works a full-time job, has their own housing, etc is having a relationship with a 50 year old? That’s not really exploitative. If they’re a poor 20 year old college student and it’s some sugar daddy/mommy type shit…then that’s hella exploitative and is wrong. Should they be locked up for it? No. Should they be questioned and pressed on it?…ehhh…I think so.

Age is typically one of the easier determiners of who holds more power when it comes to power dynamics. It’s possible for someone who is younger to have power over someone who is older, but it’s usually niche or uncommon compared the the traditional “old man/woman dating a young adult”
