Question, what gets put in the city ran grocery store and who decides what to stock up. Like could the city potentially decide to just not have certain food groups from particular ethnic groups.

It’s so funny how everyone’s counterargument to it is “they wouldn’t make a profit” like brother that is the point of a public service

people say the same shit about the Post Office, and it’s like yeah man, the Post Office operates at a loss because it’s a public service, not a business. It’s NOT profitable to deliver packages to every single address in the USA, that’s why companies like Amazon turn over delivery to the USPS if the recipient’s address is difficult to reach.

I mean I’d hope they’d sell fresh produce and whatnot, all sorts of ingredients but no pre-made particulars, so people of all ethnic groups could get their ingredients from there and visit a more ethnically specific store for the more niche items, because there are lots of ethnic groceries in NYC.

Like I’m not from New York, but where I grew up there’s lots of ethnic grocers, and also the big grocery chain stores. If I wanted to make Indian food, I’d get all the basic produce and meat and whatnot at the big chain store, and then buy a couple of the Indian specific ingredients at a store like Patel Brothers or something. And I think city owned grocers that sell the same stuff as the big chains would be great.

Ok ok that makes some sense, there’s one part I’m caught up on tho cuz like is it like a review board approving which produce to buy and from where or would there just be one manager at the city ran store that would decide. And there are a lot of ethnic stores already here which are great so that’s why I asked if it all would be included you know what I’m saying

I think the most effective way to do it would be to have individual store managers that determine what’s sold at each one, like the big grocery chains do, bot everything about those chains is bad, some of what they do is genuinely sensible and efficient policy.

I can go to two different Food Lions in two different neighborhoods, and they’ll have different selections on items like fresh meat and produce, because the store manager has some discretion based on local demand. And I think that’s great, and should be how any grocery store runs.

Interesting and thank you for helping me understand this a little bit better, it’s gonna be interesting to see how it’s gonna be implemented from my point of view at least
