This actually made me so mad yesterday. I work at a news station and it was in one of my shows last night, and the fact that they’re calling a decades-old childhood game a “TikTok trend” just to demonize kids being kids is insane. Original OP summarized my thoughts exactly, but I had to vent
It also really downplays an actual problematic TikTok trend right now, which is like ding dong ditch, except kids are aggressively kicking/slamming into doors and running. That’s what I honestly thought happened here before I read into it, and it would’ve been incredibly sad, but expected. This, however, is just gut wrenching. That kid was just having a fun day off with friends :/
Genuinely what I thought, and I see clickbait headlines like this all the time. Even from publications like AP sometimes. It’s disappointing as hell. I’m just glad my coworkers and I can critically think enough to rework that information when we put it on air. Even though we just cover a few dozen counties, I feel like it makes some kind of difference
I’m going to bet you’re similar in this; I usually find myself pretty desensitized to crime stories nowadays after working in this industry for a few years, but this one really got me. Like I was just complaining with my coworkers about some guy in our DMA shooting some cops (they’re okay) and killing himself, which kept us on air well past the end of our show, but knowing this full grown adult chased a CHILD down the street to commit murder over a harmless game is despicable.
