Taiwan, France, South Korea, Poland, Portugal, are notably functioning democracies with Presidents who are elected via popular vote.
There’s no real democratic country that does popular vote😂 Guess what countries does a nationwide popular vote for their head of state&govt? Russia, North Korea (for approval), most South American countries

Taiwan- yes but there’s the head of govt (who is appointed by the pres). SK- yes For France Poland and Portugal it’s like kinda but they’re parliamentary so the power is held by the PM (France Pres has power too tho. Portugals doesn’t)

France is much like Taiwan in that the president appoints the head of government. Poland the president is the command in chief and directs foreign policy and has veto power (all very real jobs) And portugals president dissolved parliament last year. He is not ceremonial
